<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After an exciting and informative week of work experience, working within the marketing team, Friday has arrived and I am able to share the Food Cube case study I’ve produced with some help!!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Having a Food Cube at Cleeve School's sixth form where I attend, it seemed a perfect opportunity to see Graphic Designer Andy in action with the camera and to see how Marketing Executive Caz works her magic with the masses of information collected and crafts it into small condensed paragraphs for the case study.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Experiencing the Food Cube myself for a hot drink on a regular basis, I was aware of the benefits it has to offer our sixth form, although this wasn’t enough information to produce a case study with. So Andy and I went on a visit to Cleeve School, where I was classed as a visitor, to interview both my peers, a member of the catering team and my teacher.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Once we arrived and Andy had snapped away, the interview with the Acting Assistant Head of Sixth Form began, during which the Food Cube was seen in action with two students purchasing a hot drink. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After I had carried out all three interviews, and made over a page of notes on the benefits and uses of the Cube, it was back to the office to use this information.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Constructing the text for the case study was a task I had underestimated - trying to include all the points made by those I had interviewed whilst keeping it short and punchy wasn’t as easy as it appeared. However with assistance from the expert herself, Cleeve School’s Food Cube Case Study was successfully completed!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here's the finished article...

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cleeve School's Food Cube Case Study
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Cleeve School, a large secondary school with busy sixth form, wanted a solution to encourage sixth form students to remain on site during their free periods. They decided to install a PKL Food Cube directly outside the sixth form centre, and created an outdoor dining area with the addition of a canopy and tables.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Cube has proven to be hugely popular within the sixth form, especially as it is an exclusive outlet not available to the rest of the school community. It offers menu items not available in the main canteen, such as hot drinks, and is open throughout the day rather than just at lunch and break times.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">An added bonus of the Cube, manned by Julie from the catering team, is that the sixth formers have been able to build a great relationship with her. This has not only increased the Cube’s popularity, but has also made students more confident in putting forward their own menu suggestions and ideas.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> “The students really enjoy having the Food Cube and being able to come and use it on a regular basis throughout the day. The sixth form students really like the privilege of having it to use for themselves, and we have seen an improvement in students staying on site. I would definitely recommend it.” – Emma Smith, Acting Assistant Head of Sixth Form

For more information on PKL Food Cubes, click here.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Across the business, our different teams have regular opportunities to train with each other, to keep their skills and knowledge up to date and maintain a good oversight of the whole business.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Stuart, one of our drivers, ran an on-site delivery training for our sales team this morning, to help them better understand the practicalities of how we deliver our kitchen units to clients. This will help them know what to look out for when undertaking site surveys with new clients, and will help ensure our customers continue to be offered the highest quality service.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
This morning’s training started off in the Board Room, with a presentation on what to look out for when assessing sites for delivery, information on the Hiab’s range, and diagrams showing the Hiab’s reach and the turning spaces needed for our different vehicles.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The team then headed out to the yard for a practical demonstration of the Hiab crane, which Stuart used to lift a kitchen unit off the truck. He first showed the correct positioning and space required for the truck’s outriggers (stabiliser legs), to ensure the lorry remains stable throughout the lift. This would need to be taken into account especially on tight sites, as they stick out quite a long way from the sides of the truck when correctly extended.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Having climbed up and attached the unit to the Hiab, he then demonstrated the full reach of the arm, to show the sales team the space and angles required for such a lift, and to show the Hiab’s maximum capabilities.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The sales team had the opportunity to ask lots of questions, which was especially useful for the newest members of the team who joined us at the end of last year, enabling them to build on the training they received during their inductions.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You can visit our website for more information on our delivery and installation service, and if you order a kitchen from us, keep an eye out as it might be Stuart that delivers it to you!

In such a busy company, it's impossible to tell you everything we've been up to this year, so instead we've given one highlight to represent each month of 2015, to give you a quick snapshot of our year! Here's Part 2!

July - LACA Exhibition

We headed off to the annual LACA exhibition in July, and as well as having a stand inside, we took one of our Food Cubes with us which delegates were able to have a look around. Visitors to our stand were given a special treasure map to help them hunt down the Food Cube, which was located outside the exhibition, and also have the chance to enter a lucky dip to win a prize!

August - Wilderness Festival

We supplied four coldrooms and over 250 items of catering equipment for Wilderness Festival 2015, spread over nine different locations on site, offering a wide range of food and dining options.

Highlights included long table banquets, which involved luxury, large-scale communal dining, and featured a different guest chef each day. Guest chefs included Raymand Blanc, Angela Hartnett, and Niklas Ekstedt, and they catered for around 700 people each day.
We had a busy time in August and September making sure that schools were ready to provide a meal service in time for the new term. This included lots of KitchenPods, which were installed at primary schools to make sure they were ready to provide hot school meals in September, and an impressive temporary kitchen installation at a school in London, where we had to crane lots of kitchen units over buildings to their location at the back of the school.
We celebrated back to the future day by digging through some of our photo archives to see if we could recreate them in the modern day. While it was a lot of fun to do, we were also surprised at just how many members of staff were still around to recreate their original poses, particularly as many of the photos we used dated back to the late 80s and early 90s. You can see some more of our time travelling staff just here!
November was a hugely exciting time for us at PKL, as we prepared for the launch of a new division, U-Select. This involved the designing and launching of a new brand for the division, a new website, and preparations for the launch event, which was held at a venue called the Ice Tank in London. You can see some pictures of the launch day above, and also some of the U-Select team enjoying lunch at Burgers@N8, the first ever U-Select customer!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In such a busy company, it's impossible to tell you everything we've been up to this year, so instead we've picked just one photo to represent each month of 2015, to give you a quick snapshot of our year! Here's Part 1 - January to June. Part 2 to follow soon...

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
January - ExtensionPods Launch
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In January, we introduced our range of “ExtensionPods” – modular buildings which can be joined onto existing buildings as an alternative to a traditional extension. They can be used to create an open plan space, or be kept as separate rooms with their own doors. The range includes the KitchenPod, PrepPod, DishwashPod, StoragePod and LaundryPod, each offering bespoke options to suit your requirements.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">February saw the installation of our first ever Food Cube Diner – a Food Cube with integrated dining room – at Stratford-upon-Avon School. The Food Cube Diner was built to ease pressure on the main canteen when the school moved from a double to a single lunch hour and introduced a “stay on site” policy. The diner is used exclusively by Year 11, but it also has an external serving hatch available for use by other year groups. The dining room is also used by clubs and as an exam hall when not in use.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
March – New Event Kitchens Website
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In March we launched our brand new event kitchens website, dontforgetthekitchen.com. This website is designed specifically for our event clients and offers an instant online estimate system as well as access to details of all our kitchens and equipment for hire, case studies, and health and safety information. It also gives access to crockery, cutlery and glassware from our partners at Well Dressed Tables.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
April – Large Scale Temporary Prison Kitchen
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We undertook a large scale modular kitchen project for a prison client in April, who needed a 6-month temporary kitchen solution during a major refurbishment. Comprising 35 kitchen units, and with a footprint of over 500m2, the facility was initially constructed at PKL (construction phase shown above!), with the mechanical and electrical fit-out taking place here as well as the extraction and equipment installation. It was then disassembled into individual units, delivered and re-built at the client’s site ready to go.

Throughout the year, we also held fundraising events for Comic Relief, Macmillan Cancer Support, the Royal British Legion and Children in Need, raising a total of over £365 for charity.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
June – Temporary Kitchens at Cavendish Primary School
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In June, we installed a temporary kitchen and dining facility at Cavendish Primary School in Manchester. As well as areas for preparation, production, dry and cold storage, and dishwashing, the large facility also features a dining hall, staff room and toilets. It will be on site for 18 months while the school’s old facilities undergo a major refurbishment.

Today, 21st October 2015, is officially "Back to the Future Day" - the date which Marty McFly and Doc Brown famously travelled to in the film. To celebrate this momentous day, we've dug out some photos from the PKL archives showing life at PKL since 1989 when the film was set. Keen to experience some time travel ourselves, we then set to work recreating some of our favourite snaps from over the years (many featuring the original staff members!)!

We popped down to London last week to check on the progress of two temporary school kitchen installations we were undertaking.

Our first port of call was St Paul’s School, where our team were busy installing a large temporary kitchen complex. This facility comprises a number of our temporary units linked together, all joined to a tented dining room which the school had also hired for the duration of the project. We were also installing a range of servery equipment in the dining area, from which food will be served to pupils.

We’ve worked with the supplier of the tented dining room many times before, so the teams on site worked together to successfully complete the installation. The facility will be on site for over 12 months while the existing school kitchen undergoes major refurbishment works.

We then headed across town to Eaton House The Manor School, where a crane was being used to lift our temporary kitchen units over the buildings into the area set aside for the facility, as access was very limited. They were then moved into position using forklifts.

As with St Paul’s School, this kitchen facility will also be used while the school’s existing kitchen is refurbished. We managed to get some great photos taken from the top of the crane too, capturing the fantastic view across London!

The large kitchen facility has areas for preparation, production, dry and cold storage, and dishwashing, as well as a dining hall, toilets and staff room.
The school wanted to offer a catering facility with a more contemporary high street feel to particularly appeal to older pupils. The Cube has helped reduce queue times in the main dining hall and has taken pressure off the catering staff. It has also proven to be popular with users of the nearby sports hall, and the Cube is generating additional profits outside of normal school hours by catering for people using the sports facilities.

On Saturday 25th April a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, killing thousands and affecting millions of people. Many have been left with nothing, having lost their homes and having limited access to shelter, food and clean water. It will take years and millions of pounds to help put things right, so PKL staff wanted to help.

Last week we held a cake sale in the canteen, with everyone bringing in all sorts of food to sell. We raised a total of £90, which we have donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Nepal Earthquake Appeal.
We’ve had fun trying something new today! We set up one of our temporary kitchens outside the office and invited a couple of chefs from one of our equipment suppliers to come and run a training session for some of our sales guys this morning.

Dan, Ed, Bill and Ciaran were given a hands-on lesson on how to use a whole range of commercial catering equipment, including a combi oven and salamander grill, and experienced one of our temporary kitchens from a chef’s point of view.

The chefs showed them all the features of the different equipment and discussed the best ways to get the most out of it and use it for a range of cooking styles. They also demonstrated how the kitchen layout, designed by our expert kitchen design team, had been optimised to make the most of the space and create a practical, efficient workspace.

Since we were also hosting a client meeting in the office this morning, the boys were then tasked with making hot breakfast wraps for all our visitors, and were set to work putting their new equipment knowledge into practice. These have been designed with a number of energy saving features including high-spec LED lighting, additional insulation in the roof and floor, a double-glazed serving hatch, thermostatically controlled space heater, plus energy efficient taps and electric water heater. Our eKitchens have an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating of B42 compared to D97 for a standard unit, and can save users over £350 per year in energy consumption, so they're a great option particularly for longer term hires.

We are hugely proud to announce that we have recently won the contract to install the first catering outlet on the Moon, in response to an anticipated increase in space travel in the next decade. Provisionally called the “Moon Cube”, it will be used to provide a range of drinks and light snacks to both astronauts and space tourists, as well as providing a stop-off point to break up longer journeys. While it is still in the very early design stages, it is anticipated that it will be ready to install within the next seven years, and there are also longer term plans in place to create a more comprehensive service station type facility if it is a success.

The Moon Cube is being designed with custom equipment to enable it to prepare and serve specialist space food. Due to the unique environment of space, food must be safe to store for relatively long periods of time, as well as being nutritionally balanced and easy to consume in low gravity environments, so this has an impact on the catering equipment required. Later this year, we will begin working alongside a number of suppliers to create new equipment designs suitable for the project, following scheduled discussions with a number of experts to identify required features and potential challenges.

Initial concept drawing for the PKL Moon Cube

The Moon Cube will feature a long-range beacon to alert passing space traffic to its presence, and transmit information on food and drink availability. An integrated computer system will also be used to communicate stock level information to the client on Earth, enabling efficient stock planning. In addition to these features, the project will also require us to implement systems for regulating the unit’s temperature, as well as air filtration and waste removal systems similar to those used in existing space vehicles.

Our highly skilled design team will be working to overcome a number of unique, site-specific challenges such as low gravity and pasteurised terrain, while it is anticipated that solar panels and generators will be used to overcome a lack of services on site. Our expert transport team are experienced in delivering to challenging locations, but this will be their greatest challenge yet. Throughout the design process, we will also be liaising with a number of agencies to discuss transport options, and as with all our projects, detailed delivery and lift plans will be created in advance.

This project is a fantastic opportunity for PKL, and follows 25 years of success in supplying catering infrastructure to prestigious projects around the world. We have started the recruitment process for a number of specialist staff to take a lead on the project, including aerospace engineers and physicists, while our existing staff will be able to provide a wealth of experience and knowledge of catering design and installation. Although the deployment is several years away, this project represents the chance to build on our strong history of catering innovation and is the start of a new era for PKL.
Here’s a sneak preview of a large scale, open plan, temporary kitchen facility which is going out on hire this week. This particular facility comprises 35 units and was constructed here at PKL HQ before being disassembled into individual units, covered ready for transport and loaded onto trucks, ready to be installed on the client’s site. The facility is currently being reassembled at the client’s location, ready for final commissioning and handover.

A facility of this size really illustrates the benefits of off-site construction. The main build of the facility took place here at PKL HQ, including all the mechanical and electrical fit-outs as well as the installation of extraction canopies and catering equipment. Due to the size of the facility, it’s taken several weeks to build, but because all this work has been undertaken at PKL, there has been no disruption to the client. The rebuilding of the facility at the client’s site is now quite straightforward, and should only take a few days craning the units into position, ready for the internal reassembly.

With a footprint of over 500m<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">2 this is a substantial facility, and will be on hire for 6 months during a major kitchen refurbishment. Three plant rooms are located on the roof, above the Central Island Canopies. These rooms house the extraction fans and the boiler for the tempered air, and also ensure that there are no roof leaks where the extraction penetrates the ceiling.

This type of large scale facility is typically specified for use during major refurbishment works at busy sites such as prisons, hospitals and universities, which have large catering operations which need to be maintained.

As well as being race week here in Cheltenham, today is also Red Nose Day, so we've had a day of fundraising for Comic Relief! After a brilliant day on Wednesday, CowCow rather let himself down yesterday, only achieving a single fourth place out of all his predictions! Today is the final day of race week though, so we've given him a pep talk and he's looking lively.

If any of his predictions are wrong today, you'll know it's because he simply can't see what he's doing! But at least he looks cool, eh?

So, without further ado, here are today's predictions.

This week is race week here in Cheltenham, so our mystical moo-cow is on the case, making bold predictions and causing havoc in the office as he launches himself at his special psychic spinner, scattering stationery all over the place and generally making a mess.

CowCow got off to a great start and successfully predicted one winner yesterday. He's particularly looking forward to Ladies' Day today (we're sure we heard him muttering about "beautiful bovines" earlier...), and is hoping to improve on yesterday's predictions.

So, here are his tips for today!

With our offices located just two miles up the road from Cheltenham Racecourse, the Cheltenham Festival is very hard for us to avoid (as are the merry, tweed-clad racegoers who like to wander about in the middle of the road as we're driving home from work!). Traffic everywhere, an abundance of fascinators and tweed, the sight of normally sensible people drinking Guinness for breakfast... There's nothing quite like the buzz of race week, and we love it really. Maybe.

For the last couple of years our psychic office bovine, CowCow, has made race predictions throughout the Festival, with varying degrees of success. Last year was particularly good, with a number of winners correctly predicted by our inexplicably mustachioed friend! This year, CowCow is back with his trusty spinner board and he's feeling confident.

In case you're new to CowCow's mystic antics, here's how it works. CowCow has a special spinner for each race, featuring equal-sized segments representing the number of horses due to run. A long-suffering human staff member then sets the spinner spinning and CowCow launches himself upon it, stopping the spinner in its tracks. The number of each segment corresponds to a horse in the race, and the one the spinner lands on is CowCow's prediction. Simple yet inspired, we're sure you'll agree.

So, on with the show! Here are today's race predictions!

We’re excited to introduce you to our brand new event kitchens website:

DontForgetTheKitchen.com

For too long, event kitchens have been forgotten about. They may not be the most exciting element to organise, but leaving your kitchen arrangements until the last minute is a terrible idea – you risk items not being available, higher prices, and lots of unnecessary stress!

Our new website is designed to make planning and booking your event kitchen and catering equipment hire a much easier and more enjoyable process, and to hopefully encourage you to not leave it until the last minute!

Dontforgetthekitchen.com features our fantastic new online estimate system, which allows you to add kitchen units and catering equipment to a basket, customise your hire with additional services, and get an instant online estimate. The website also enables you to request a quote for crockery, cutlery and glassware from our friends over at Well Dressed Tables, who we’ve teamed up with to offer a more comprehensive solution to our event customers.

We supply events of any size, so whether you need a few items of catering equipment or a huge temporary kitchen facility, we can help.

The other big news in the events sector at the moment is the introduction of the new CDM Regulations in April this year, which will result in a higher level of safety standards for the events industry. We’re experts in event kitchen health and safety, and we’ve already been supplying CDM compliant products and services for the last five years! The new website has a whole section dedicated to event health and safety, so you can read up on all our different accreditations and find out how the new CDM Regulations will affect your event.

We last caught up with AFC Trident at the end of November, and plenty has happened since then.

In their first match of December, Trident played Blockley Sports in the third round of the County Cup. With top goal scorer Chris Morris unable to play due to injury, the rest of the team stepped up, with Daniel Whisby scoring in the first half. Stuart Hindley and Craig Cooke kept a strong defence in the second half, preventing Blockley Sports from equalising and enabling Trident to score two further goals from Matt Hindley and Liam Poole. The game ended 3-0, with Trident securing a place in the quarter final.

So far unbeaten, following 12 straight wins, Trident’s next match was against Frampton United 3rds. Despite Trident having the most chances in the first half, Frampton were the first to score, followed soon after by an equaliser from Liam Poole. There were more missed chances for Trident in the second half, while Frampton had an opportunity and took it, scoring a second goal. With just seconds to spare, Liam Poole scored his second goal of the game for Trident, but a 2-2 draw was the best Trident could manage, and this unlucky thirteenth game of the season finally put an end to Trident’s winning streak.

Following their disappointing draw against Frampton, Trident travelled to Rodborough hoping to get things back on track. Unfortunately Rodborough Old Boys had other ideas, and took the lead at half time. Another goal for Rodborough early in the second half was eventually followed by Matt Hindley scoring for the Purple Army. This spurred Trident into action, but they were unable to level the score. Rodborough took advantage of a late slip in defence to finish the game 3-1, marking Trident’s first defeat of the season.

In the first game of 2015, Trident travelled to The Village FC to fight for a place in the semi final of the County Cup. This promised to be an exciting game as both sides were top of their respective leagues. In an energy-filled first half, Karl Robertson and Matt Hindley scored for Trident, leading to a 2-0 half time score. Another two Trident goals early in the second half, courtesy of Liam Poole and Matt Hindley again, doubled the team’s lead. Left back Michael Levett scored Trident’s fifth goal, followed by a great header from Matt Brookes. The final score was 6-2, with the Purple Army going through to the semi final.

Trident’s next game, against Coaley Rovers Res, resulted in an impressive 8-0 victory, with hat tricks from Matt Brookes and Karl Robertson, plus a goal from Chris Morris after returning from injury. Their eighth goal came courtesy of the Coaley goalkeeper, who punched the ball into his own net from a cross.

In other news this month, Trident reached the semi final of the Charity Cup after Stonehouse 3rds couldn't field a team.

What you might not have realised though, is that our Pods also make a great alternative to a traditional extension, and can be connected to existing buildings to increase the size of existing kitchen facilities.

If you already have a functioning kitchen but are struggling with capacity and require more space, our “ExtensionPods” provide a simple solution. As with a more traditional extension, these Pods can be joined to your existing building and provide additional production, preparation, storage, dishwashing or laundry space. They can be used to either create an open plan layout, or be kept as separate rooms and accessed via an internal door if you’d prefer.

We’ve recently created some options to show the different types of ExtensionPod available, which can provide solutions for different requirements.
KitchenPod
Use one of our hugely popular KitchenPods to expand your existing kitchen with additional production space, allowing you to produce even more meals. This is ideal for places such as schools or care homes, where demand for meals may be increasing over time and putting pressure on the existing kitchen.

DishwashPod
This dishwash facility can free up space in your current kitchen by creating a new dedicated area for dishwashing. The addition of a DishwashPod extension would enable you to reconfigure your existing kitchen to maximise your preparation and production space, helping increase your meal capacity.

StoragePod
Create extra storage space in your current kitchen by adding a StoragePod extension. It is ideal for either dry or cold storage, and helps keep preparation and production areas clutter-free. Having additional storage space may also enable you to benefit from buying supplies in bulk, reducing costs, risk and disruption from deliveries.

PrepPod
If you need additional preparation space in your kitchen, a PrepPod extension is ideal. Giving you greater capacity to prepare food from scratch, this option can also enable you to increase the number and type of meals you produce.

LaundryPod
Our LaundryPod extensions are particularly well-suited to care homes, hospitals, prisons and universities, and are a great way to extend your laundry facilities or add a laundry room to existing communal areas.

Food Cubes
If you don't have room for an extension but need to take the pressure off your existing kitchen, don't forget about our permanent modular Food Cubes. They can be situated elsewhere on site as standalone facilities and can be used to produce light meals and snacks as well as providing an extra servery area.

Hopefully you’re now a little more familiar with the different options available and the huge range of possibilities they provide! If you’re considering a kitchen extension and would like a chat about our different ExtensionPod options and how they could help you, please do get in touch with myself or one of my colleagues.
